High performance media management workflow relies on intelligent and flexible storage management. Typical broadcast and media storage systems comprise storage technologies from multiple vendors to provide browse, production, online, archive, playout and OTT.
AST manages them all as one single system and enables your organisation to cost effectively access content and take control of enterprise media lifecycle management.

  • A single point of storage access, management and scalability.
  • Multi-level storage management, with unlimited storage capacity.
  • Manages any combination of data-tape robotic libraries alongside NAS and SAN configurations, and virtualised cloud storage.
  • NAS, SAN, LTO and LTFS, SONY ODA, Amazon Glacier, and others.
  • Support for long term content preservation with Sony ODA.
  • Storage can be physical, virtual, located at different sites and cloud based.
  • Each storage subsystem can be scaled up accoding to business requirements: ingest, production, content preparation aand playout.
  • Automatically manages content replication.
  • Tedial’s unique high-performance alternative to third-party HSMs.
  • Data migration between obsolete storage systems and remote sites can be safely managed whilst daily workflow continues.
  • Protects your investment in third-party storage technologies by managing them independently of their proprietary tools and file systems.

  • Workflow aware AST provides High Performance Media Access

Harnessing Tarsys’ MAM intelligence, AST can dynamically reprioritise the job list by taking into account the workflows that are currently being executed and also those that are to be executed in the near future. This can be detected directly from production or traffic requests in third-party systems using the Tedial API and/or Tedial's BXF adaptor. This ensures that media needed by any workflow such as Production, Promos or Traffic is always kept automatically ‘online’ on disk. Immediate media availability considerably increases operators’ efficiency because they don’t have to waste time waiting to retrieve clips needed for their daily scheduled Tasks. The costly concept of ‘near-online’ becomes obsolete because the required media is always ‘online’. AST’s flexibility allows configuration according to the resources available and the precise media workflows implemented. Dynamic prioritisation of disk repositories, drivers and media transfers according to the urgency and importance of each workflow, media type and the specific user rights of the operators.

  • Intelligent Partial Restore using LTFS and LTO

Unlike many third-party data-movers, AST doesn’t constantly execute repeated individual restore commands. AST keeps a global view of all clips and their associated segments as required by different operators and workflows. This ensures optimal prioritisation of partial restores in real-time. For example, if two segments close to each other are already on disk or tape and there is a request to retrieve from the original asset a third segment located between these, AST restores only the ‘gap’ in the master file and reuses the segments already stored online to complete the restore. Equally, if there is a request to retrieve several small segments from the same media asset, AST may restore the whole file instead of retrieving the individual small segments one-by-one. This not only saves precious transfer time, it also dramatically reduces robotic tape mounting operations.

  • Media Object Based and Automatic Grouping improves archive performance

To optimise LTO tape usage, AST works by applying ‘media object’ policies to create single storage files containing several small files grouped together. This achieves efficient storage access and backup of small files such as index tables, storyboards, proxies, etc. while the small files are simultaneously kept online in disk storage for instant availability. AST also supports rules for automatic group archiving because from a performance and operational perspective it’s better to keep similar things together. Tape groups and on-line disk partitions can be defined in order to classify the media from different sources (e.g. news, programmes) or different formats (high and low quality). This feature provides great versatility, helps implement comprehensive user media access rights and enables resources to be dedicated to the most critical areas. This is done automatically as background tasks so busy operators are not burdened with the day to day housekeeping of storage.
